those colors and shapes, pictures of mountains

of flowers, bridges, penguins and leopards,

the ones depicting sports – my favorites,

portraits of kings, queens, famous citizens,

many long departed from earthly life—

some stamps surviving harsh separation

from the missive by soaking in water,

then careful tugging at the four corners,

others tearing, their value diminished,

still others in near perfect condition,

a collector’s joy, though franked and now glue-less,

some, pristine, unused, bearing no postmark,

waiting to serve the intended purpose

to take a letter, package or postcard

to a business, a friend, or a love,

or hide forever, the prized possession

of an avid collector, yours truly—
